Nestled in the picturesque mountain village of Le Lienz, just outside Barèges, Chez Louisette - Auberge du Lienz serves as a heartfelt homage to traditional French mountain cuisine. This cozy auberge offers a warm retreat after a day of hiking or skiing, where the dining atmosphere is unpretentious, friendly, and evokes the charm of an authentic Alpine refuge. Whether you arrive in hiking gear or fresh from the slopes, you’ll feel instantly at home amid the rustic décor and welcoming hospitality.
The menu is a delightful celebration of the region’s culinary heritage, spotlighting generous, comforting dishes cooked with care and local flair. The star attraction is undoubtedly the Garbure de Louisette, a rich, slow-cooked stew combining duck, beans, and a ham hock, simmered to perfect tenderness. It’s a soul-warming dish that conjures the sensation of a crackling fire and the crisp mountain air outside. For cheese lovers, the TartiToye Tartiflette -- a hearty gratin of local cheese, ventrèche, and onions served with a fresh salad -- is a luscious treat that melts in your mouth and fills you with Alpine contentment.
Other standout offerings include the Assiette du Skieur, showcasing farm-fresh eggs, savory ham, and "pomme de terre paysannes" (country-style potatoes) paired with a crisp green salad, all ideal for recharging after outdoor adventures. Vegetarians will appreciate the Plat du jour végétarien, thoughtfully crafted to provide satisfying options in this meat-forward mountain setting. The patisseries and desserts, such as the vibrant Tarte aux Myrtilles, offer a sweet finale that perfectly balances the rustic intensity of the savory courses.
Guests consistently praise the warm and attentive service at Chez Louisette. As one visitor noted, the staff’s kindness and hospitality enrich not just the meal but the entire experience, creating an inviting atmosphere that encourages relaxation and conviviality. While some find certain dishes a touch pricey, the quality and authenticity of the food justify the investment. The casual vibe means there’s no need to dress up—whether you’re drying off your hiking boots or unwinding from a ski session, you’ll be perfectly comfortable.
Many diners mention the panoramic mountain views and the serenity of the location as an integral part of the charm. The friendly staff are happy to help guests make excellent meal choices, enhancing a visit that’s as much about the joy of discovery as it is about the food itself. Whether you’re craving a savory regional stew, a robust tartiflette, or a deliciously fresh salad and dessert, Chez Louisette is a must-visit destination for lovers of authentic French mountain fare.
For those seeking a genuine taste of Barèges’ culinary traditions with the warmth of heartfelt hospitality, Chez Louisette - Auberge du Lienz stands out as an unforgettable dining experience, blending rustic comfort with exquisite flavors that linger long after the last bite.

Lovely place to stop for a sensibly-priced coffee... Food looked great but was too early for us to eat. Friendly and hospitable staff.

I ate lunch here twice. It’s on the side of a mountain. The second time, I hiked up from Barèges. It’s very casual; hiking clothes are fine. This is the perfect place to try the regional soup/stew called garbure, a slowed-cooked mixture of duck and beans simmered with a ham hock and lots of good things. A sort of cousin to cassoulet, in my opinion. And Chez Louisette offers delicious wines and lovely desserts. I enjoyed a Tarte aux Myrtilles. A very busy place, but the servers are friendly, even to Americans with limited French. Merci!
